By Public Transportation:

The Trenton Ave Arts Festival and the Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby are easily accessible from the MFL Berks stop. The festival’s entrance and the Derby’s infamous Mudpit are 2 blocks southeast from the Berks stop.

By car:

The festival is located on the 2000/2200 blocks of Trenton Ave (between Dauphin and Norris) Philadelphia, PA, 19125. It’s easily accessible from Frankford, York, Front streets and from I-95.

By foot:

If you are in the glorious neighborhoods of East Kensington, Fishtown or Port Richmond, please take a quick walk over to Trenton Ave and Norris St for the festival, and enjoy the day!

Sk8lamps is the logical conclusion of Victor Perez's experiences. A result of lifetime art interests and skateboarding combined with passions for recycling and light. Each is an interpretation and representation of these themes.

Victor describes his approach as upcycling. After all, recycling is a simple proposition- taking something that once fulfilled a purpose and returning it to that purpose. A plastic bottle is processed to make another plastic bottle, shards of glass are liquefied to again become glass, metal is melted to make more metal. All of these are great ideas, as necessary as they are fantastic. Sk8lamps is different. It's about the repurposing of otherwise discarded materials to a new, improved state.

The lamps are constructed of used or rejected decks, wheels and trucks that have either fulfilled or cannot fulfill their intended purposes. The electrical pieces are removed from devices no longer deemed aesthetically pleasing and given extended life. It's more than a recycled skateboard, a recycled lamp, or a recycled idea. It is upcycling. The upcycling is art. The art is unique.

Darla Jackson and Justin Grant are the owners of the Philadelphia Sculpture Gym, a soon to be space where artists will be able to access heavy-duty tools and storage space and get one-on-one help with making their art. The project is being started with the help of a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, as part of its Knight Arts Challenge.

"Seeing the need for a place for sculptors to have access to the expensive equipment that they left behind in art school, we talked about the possibility of opening a communal space in their neighborhood that would run like a gym. Members would pay a monthly fee to use the space and both of us would monitor the shops and provide assistance and safety training, along with one-on-one “personal training” sessions and group classes.

Right now we are busy finding a location for the Philadelphia Sculpture Gym, and are looking forward to outfitting the space with equipment to create fully functioning wood working and metal working shops, along with areas for mold making and casting. As part of the grant from Knight Foundation, we also have to match the amount of the award, which we plan to do through online fundraising and by hosting various community based fundraising events. The Trenton Ave Arts Fest is our first public event as the Philadelphia Sculpture Gym, so stop by and say hi!!"

I am a papercutting artist, and transfer those techniques, by Xacto knife, onto the black rubber from flat tubes. I love all the possibilities of the material, and it makes my heart kind of warm + fuzzy when I get to create something beautiful from some rubber that would've otherwise been hanging out in a landfill for a long time.

We are a team. My brother, Peter and I create objects D’art from repurposed flatware made from Silver-plate and Stainless. All handcrafted in our studios in Rochester, NY and Havertown, PA.

Our adventure in repurposed silverware began in 1996. It started with making hooks from silver-plate forks. This was to compliment the vintage Linens and Textiles that I was selling at Antique shows. It progressed into making other smaller items from the abundance of vintage silverware that was literally piling up in my storage area. Our first wind chimes sold in 2001 in Brimfield, MA and that is how we christened our first wind chimes “Brimfield”.

We make it look easy but the process is labor intensive and always fun.

For Wind chimes:

The Silverware: We first gather the silverware and then mass clean it in a tumbler or by hand. Second we pound it flat. Then bend and fold and twist or whatever else needs to be done. Drilling and threading the silverware is the most boring part of the process.

All the other items that we handcraft follow the same basic process. Gather, clean and create. Sometimes you cannot tell you are even wearing a piece of flatware that has a history. Some pieces used are 50 years old and sometimes 100 years. All pieces are saving landfill space and becoming wonderful works of art and making people smile. As one young customer said to me "Your Booth is so enchanting"

My photography serves as a document of American cities and the changes they have seen through history. My images expose what most of our cities have become since the early 20th century and a harsh reality of how much neglect has taken place in the past sixty years. My intent is not only to show the negative affects of this environment, but also to show a glimpse of how beautiful cities like Baltimore and Philadelphia once were by exposing a raw type of beauty in their present condition. I consider my photography a portrait of a city and the history its content reveals.

I am currently living in Baltimore and studying its history and why the city is in the poor condition we find it today and how it can be improved. My graduate work was focused on the failed urban renewal project in East Baltimore known as Old Town Mall.

Meredith Kleiber will be at the Trenton Ave Arts Fest! Come by to visit her stunning work.

She is a Philadelphia-based street and portrait photographer. She became fascinated with the chaos of everyday city life in 2006 shortly after starting a job in Center City Philadelphia.

The scenes that she witnessed daily led her to purchase her first camera so that she could begin to capture the commotion from her own perspective. Other inspirations of Meredith’s, besides Philadelphia, include traveling abroad and the unique faces she sees everywhere she goes. She has shown her work at many cafés, galleries, and restaurants in Philadelphia and can be contacted for freelance assignments at meredith@kleibography.com.

The talented and versatile Sara Broski will be bringing her stellar work to TAAF this year!

She runs both Hisss Illustration (hisss.etsy.com) and Tiny Galaxies (tinygalaxies.etsy.com) - two totally unique entities.

Hisss Illustration features prints of her paintings which have been called whimsical, cute, and clever and often get a good laugh by their viewers. Most pieces have a visual pun which can be fully explained by their titles, and some can mean something different to each person.

Tiny Galaxies is her collection of resin and fine glitter jewelry. Ranging from earrings, to necklaces, to hairpins, from fine and sterling silver, to gold filled, to base metals each piece is sparkly but simple enough for everyday wear. Metal components are made by Sara, keeping each piece unique and 100% handmade.

Rock to the Future

This year, TAAF is proud to welcome Rock to the Future to the fest.

Aside from their amazing name, they are an amazing group. Here's a little info about their program -

RTTF is a free afterschool music education and youth development program, open to Philadelphia School District students this fall.

The program focuses on the incorporation of music education with academics to create success in school and in life by improving cognitive thinking, learning capacity, socialization skills, self-esteem, and creative thinking.

Students will learn an instrument – their choice of guitar, bass guitar, drums, vocals, or keyboards – and will also receive homework help. The students work together to write new, original music and attend free educational and musical seminars and workshops. Students will attend the free program every day after school.

Yes, there actually IS a School of Rock. Is there anything cooler?

Hello my favorite artists and do-gooders!

I am writing to tell you some sad news that you may or may not have heard. I will not be organizing the Trenton Avenue Arts Festival this coming year. However, it was a personal choice and is indicative of some very good things.

BYO Print, my printshop that I launched in March has taken off, and I will not be able to balance my time running both and working full time. Krista Peel and Zak Starer will be your new leaders, and are veterans of the festival too. Krista was a planner last year, and they both were vendors. They are great folks who I'm sure will take their knowledge and make the fest even better! I will see you all at the festival; I hope to be there representing BYO Print and printing onsite!

You will be able to continue using the festival email, eknaartsfest@gmail.com.

It will simply be answered by Krista and Zak from here on out!

Tomorrow is the first annual GirardFest. Have you heard that SEPTA is rerouting a trolley for a street festival? I've got to see that...

Also tomorrow, Lehigh Avenue Arts Festival. They are coordinating events and have a shuttle running between venues, so check them both out!

I'll be running around at both, scoping things out!

It's true that you came out to our festival on Trenton Avenue, saw the kinetic sculptures, bought art, drank beer, listened to the local music, ate local food. Did you know that the Trenton Avenue Arts Festival is put on entirely by neighborhood volunteers, the East Kensington Neighbors Association? EKNA, for short, is a young civic just west of Fishtown (FNA), that does amazing things in our little pocket.

Come on our to one of our monthly meetings, and learn what we have going on.

We're greening East Kensington like you wouldn't believe...

Our President sounds like a Baptist Preacher (...but only sometimes!)

We meet at a brewery, so you know what that means; we bathe in free, local beer! (Well, we drink it at least...)

We're on a personal cell # level with our 26th district! (Seriously.)

We are generational residents, newbies, families, hard workers. Join us! We make great things happen!
